Well since our last article was released on the Qantas data breach, the data has been leaked by the hackers and some of you may be wondering, what now?

Firstly, don't panic - panic is the enemy after all!
Secondly - remember the advice given in the article and these videos:
Long vid: https://youtu.be/fMX-QhIrsew
Short vid: https://youtu.be/ySjU8995D2s
These videos can help you to stay aware of what may happen with your data now it has been leaked.
You should also keep an eye on the official advice from Qantas and relevant Government agencies as information gets released. It may also be worth seriously looking into one of the data privacy companies mentioned in the videos and previous article:
Remember to be very suspicious of new calls/emails/post about accounts or clarifying data. If you get calls from people stating they are from an institution (bank, Qantas, Government, Microsoft etc.) then you may benefit by telling them you will hang up and call them on their official number before clarifying any details.
If they protest or try to be too pushy, then I would be hanging up the phone and reporting the encounter to the same institution they claimed to be. Be prepared for them to get abusive if you are resistant, don't get upset at this but rather take it as confirmation you did the right thing.
If you start to get new marketing calls, it may be worth asking where they got your data and asking them to remove it. Chances are a lot of this data will end up ingested into marketing applications and abused, this has happened in the past and companies don't always know (or rather don't wish to know) where their marketing data comes from.
We will provide further updates as appropriate, however given the timeframe being very short between our article and the leak - we felt it was appropriate to make a brief update.
Summary
In summary, the data has been leaked but this doesn't change much with the original article. The data being leaked means the chances of the data being used does increase as it's now easy for the lazy criminal but the threat was the same before the leak.
Take care out there!
